Behind the Scenes: How We Quality Check and Prepare Every Item at Blueberry
Share
The most common question we hear from families new to second-hand shopping isn't about brands or sizes. It's about trust: how do I know what I'm actually getting?
It's a fair question. Anyone who has bought pre-loved clothing sight unseen knows the disappointment of an item arriving with a stain the listing forgot to mention, or a zipper that gives up on the second wear. That experience is exactly what Blueberry was built to eliminate.
Every single item in our shop passes through the same hands-on process before it earns a place in your child's wardrobe. Today we're pulling back the curtain on how that works, from the moment a piece arrives with us to the moment it appears on the site.
Step 1: Curation Starts Before the Clothes Arrive
Quality control begins with what we say yes to. Blueberry curates premium European and international children's brands — names like Jacadi, Petit Bateau, and Ralph Lauren, alongside Bonpoint, Catimini, Sergent Major, and other labels chosen for one reason: they're made to last beyond a single childhood.
When families submit items through our sellback program, we're clear about our standards up front. We only accept pieces with minimal to no signs of wear. Items with holes, rips, stains, or broken zippers don't make the cut, no matter the brand on the label. This first filter means the vast majority of what reaches our inspection table is already in beautiful shape.
Step 2: The Point-by-Point Inspection
Once an item arrives, it goes through a physical, hands-on inspection. Not a quick glance — a deliberate check of every element that matters for real-life wear:
Fabric and seams. We examine the material for pilling, thinning, fading, and stretch, then run along every seam to check the stitching is sound. Children's clothing lives a hard life; we want to know the piece has plenty of it left.
Fastenings. Every button, snap, zipper, and tie gets tested. A missing snap on a bodysuit or a sticky zipper on a coat is exactly the kind of detail that turns a bargain into a frustration, so we check them all.
Stains and marks. Items are inspected under good light, inside and out — collars, cuffs, knees, and hems get particular attention, since that's where little adventures leave their evidence.
Original details. Where original brand tags are still attached, we note it. These pieces often qualify for our higher condition grades.
Step 3: Honest Condition Grading
After inspection, each item is assigned one of our defined condition grades. This is the heart of our transparency promise, and it's worth knowing what each grade actually means:
New — direct from the vendor with tags on, in perfect condition.
New With Tags — purchased and owned by someone else, but never worn. New in every way that matters, without the new price.
Excellent — little to no signs of wear; in some cases the original tags are still attached. This is the standard the large majority of our catalogue meets.
Very Good — light wear, light signs of washing, or a minor defect, always noted on the product page.
Good — some wear or a noticeable defect, always clearly described.
Beautifully Flawed — a small, honest issue like a missing button or tiny repair, on a piece that otherwise has plenty of life left. We think some of the best finds fall into this category — you just deserve to know about the flaw before you buy.
The rule we grade by is simple: we only sell clothes we'd be happy for our own little ones to wear. And if an item has any defect at all, it's stated plainly on the product page. No surprises is the whole point.
You can read the full definitions any time on our Clothing Conditions page.
Step 4: Cleaning and Preparation
Before an item is photographed or listed, it's prepared to first-hand standards. We ensure each piece is clean and ironed so that what arrives at your door is ready to go straight into the wardrobe and ready to go — not the laundry basket.
This step matters more than people expect. Part of what makes second-hand shopping feel second-hand is the presentation. Our goal is the opposite: opening a Blueberry parcel should feel like opening any premium order, because in every way that counts, it is one.
Step 5: Photography That Shows What You're Getting
Every item is photographed showing its actual condition. If a piece has a noted flaw, we show it rather than hide it. Combined with the written condition notes, this means you can zoom in and judge for yourself before you order — and it's a big part of why so many customers tell us the items arrive looking even better than expected.
Step 6: The Listing Itself
Finally, each piece is listed with a clear, structured title — brand, colour, style, material, and size — plus a description that covers the details a parent actually wants: what the fabric feels like, how the piece fastens, and anything worth knowing about the fit.
Why We Go to This Trouble
Because trust is the entire business. Second-hand shopping only works as a long-term habit if every order confirms your decision rather than testing it. Our 14-day no-questions-asked return policy exists as a safety net, but our real goal is that you never need it.
And there's a bigger picture, too. Every quality-checked piece that finds a second family is one less new garment that needs to be produced, and one more step toward a genuinely circular wardrobe for your children — at a fraction of what those brands cost new.
The Same Standards Apply When You Sell to Us
If you have gently-used premium children's clothing at home, our quality process works in your favour as a seller as well: because we're selective, Blueberry items hold their reputation, and that's what makes the sellback programme worthwhile for everyone. Freshly washed pieces in excellent shape from the brands we love are always welcome — start with our simple 3-step process on the Sell Your Clothes page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are all items cleaned before sale? Yes. Every piece is freshly cleaned and pressed before it's photographed and listed, so it arrives ready to wear.
What if an item has a defect? Any defect is clearly described on the product page and reflected in the condition grade. Beautifully Flawed pieces, for example, are honestly labelled so you know exactly what you're choosing.
What condition are most items in? The large majority of our catalogue is graded Excellent or better — including New and New With Tags pieces that have never been worn at all.
Can I return an item if it's not what I expected? Yes. We offer a 14-day no-questions-asked return policy, though our aim is that the detailed photos and condition notes mean there's never a surprise in the first place.
